Aside from improper welding techniques and lack of cleaning, the most common cause of intergranular corrosion is the formation of chromium carbides, which has a negative impact on the fittings. But due to the modification in the chemistry of ASTM A403 Wp317L Reducer, this alloy can outperform several conventional alloys, making it a viable candidate for welding operations. The modification done here is that the content of carbon is lowered in 317L Stainless Steel Fitting such that it amounts to about 0.03% of the total weight. Similar to most austenitic alloys that have lowered carbon modifications, the new chemistry reduces the strength of the A403 Wp317L Tee. To combat the effects of the loss in strength, the reduced carbon content is replaced with nitrogen in its alloy, thus bringing up the strength of 317L Pipe Fittings at par to that of grade 317.
