It is very common to see grade 10.9 bolts in those applications which require high strength fasteners. Specifically, the automotive industry prefers to use bolts of this grade. Class 10.9 Jh Bolt is similar to bolts that belong to class 8. This Stud Grade 10.9 is a high strength carbon steel alloy. In terms of strength, class 8 bolts have a lower strength in comparison to Class 10.9 Bolt. This alloy is also treated by tempering. Unlike other carbon steel alloys, fasteners belonging to this particular grade contain trace amounts of boron in their chemical composition. Such steels benefit from the addition of Boron. The hardenability of the Grade 10.9 Bolts increases even with the addition of boron in trace quantities. Although this steel has additions of phosphorus and sulfur in its alloy, its composition is lower than the content of carbon in the Grade 10.9 Nuts chemistry.
The wear resistance of the alloy is good, which is why these fasteners are ideal in automobiles, where lack of wear resistance leads to failure. As expected of carbon steel alloys, the corrosion resistance property of 10.9 Bolt is low. To influence good corrosion resistance behavior, many manufacturers recommend using a surface treatment on the Grade 10.9 Threaded Rod. Apart from hot dip galvanization, which is an effective method to delay the onset of corrosion, and helps in the prevention of scratches on the surface of the Grade 10.9 Metric Bolts, there are other useful coatings available in the market. Another common surface treatment is zinc plating. Though zinc plating is mildly effective, the thick coat of zinc applied on the 10.9 Hex Bolt during galvanization is considered to be more efficient in the long run.
