There are two grades in this specification, i.e. - grade A and grade B. Though the material remains the same, there is a slight modification in their chemical composition and the mechanical strength of the API 5L Grade B Pipe. In grade A, the content of carbon (0.25%) and manganese (0.95%) is lower. Whereas the content of carbon added in API 5L Grade B Erw Pipe is about 0.30%, with the inclusion of 1.20% manganese in its alloy. The change in the chemistry of the alloy leads to an increase in the tensile and yield strength of grade B. API specification API 5L Gr B PSL1 Equivalent pipes have applications that range from Construction to the transportation of steam water. In addition to this, the API 5L Grade B Erw Pipe Suppliers recommend using these pipes for the purpose of underground transportation as well as the process of extracting groundwater during construction.

The specified API 5L Gr B Material used to construct both seamless and welded pipes is carbon steel, which is also an economical version for the petrochemical and natural gas industry. There are two PSL under the API specification 5L. The levels have been labeled as Level 1 and level 2. The API 5L Gr B PSL2 Pipe is a more strictly checked component as the manufacturer is required to adhere to certain points including test reports, chemical composition, and tracking details. In terms of their chemistry, one can expect the content of carbon to be slightly lower in API 5L Grade B Welded Pipe to achieve greater weldability. While the cost of producing the API 5L Grade B Seamless Pipe is more, they offer an advantage as they can bear stress that is almost 20% more in comparison to welded pipes.
