Out of all the aluminum alloys used across the world, the most popular ones belong to the 6000 series. This being said, both grade 6063 as well as the 6061 Aluminum Angle are widely used because they have excellent mechanical strength in addition to corrosion resistance that rates as good. For applications that have the need for higher tensile strength, many suppliers recommend the use of 6061 Aluminum C Channel because this property is higher in comparison to grade 6063. On the other hand, many architects lean towards using the 6063 Aluminum Angle strictly for the fabrication of doors, windows, frames, furniture, etc. If one were to compare the corrosion resistance properties of the 2000 series alloy and the 7075 Aluminum U Channel, the latter would be the clear winner. Yet, this material is subject to becoming brittle.
The reason for embrittlement is that the 7075 Aluminum Angle undergoes a process referred to as microsegregation, where the elements or the impurities in an alloy are chemically separated and concentrated in a non-uniform manner upon being solidified. Although the corrosion resistance properties are generally considered to be good, the 5052 Aluminum Angle demonstrates excellent resistance against seawater, which makes it suited to marine applications. Some alloys such as the 5086 Aluminum Angle do not see an increase in their strength when furnished with heat treatment. For these alloys, it is possible to achieve an increase in strength by processing the Unequal Leg Aluminum Angle with techniques like cold mechanical working, or even strain hardening.
