Belonging to the ferritic class of stainless steels, grade 409 is similar to carbon steels in terms of their microstructure. This means that the crystalline structure of the SS 409 Rings is a BCC or as known as a body-centered cubic one. The high content of chromium added to the alloy is what gives the metal its BCC structure. Though their atomic arrangement is not as close as FCC, or face-centred cubic, the crystalline arrangement in the alloy ensures that the A240 Tp 409 Circles have superior toughness and hardness properties. In addition to having great toughness, this alloy has good mechanical properties, which makes it valuable for industries that require high strength metals.
The other reason why many 409 Stainless Steel Sheet Suppliers recommend using this component is that their corrosion resistance properties at elevated temperatures range between moderate to good. This aside, it is interesting to note that this ferritic alloy’s corrosion resistance properties are not as good in comparison to austenitic stainless steel alloys. The ASTM A240 Gr409 Shims exhibits outstanding resilience to exhaust gases. And like grade 304, the alloy has good resistance to atmospheric corrosion. However, the cost of grade 409 Stainless Steel Plate is lower than grade 304, despite having similar heat resistance and corrosion resistance properties. It is not advisable to use 409 Stainless Steel Sheet for decorative applications because the alloy is susceptible to mild corrosion.
