Aluminum that is pure is very soft and extremely ductile. To improve the mechanical characteristics of the metal, it is alloyed to yield better results. For instance, the 2024 Aluminum Plate consists chemically of copper, with copper being its primary alloyant after aluminum. One similarity it shares with titanium is that the Al 2024 T4 Chequered Plates offer a high strength to weight ratio, which means the density of the alloy is lower than most conventional steel alloys. Though the corrosion resistance properties of the 2024 T3 Aluminum Sheet is significantly lower as compared to the other aluminum alloys, the alloy could be clad with Al-1Zn. When clad with Al-1Zn, it protects the alloy. However, this protection is available for a price. This means that the fatigue resistance, which was previously high for a 2024 T4 Aluminum Sheet undergoes a reduction. As usual, tempering the material will deliver better results.
For instance, the temper designation T4 means the material is solution treated, followed by subsequent 2024 T4 Sheet is to be naturally aged. On the other hand, the designation temper T351 has the ultimate tensile strength valued at about 470 MPa. Apart from being solution heat treated, the Aa2024 T351 Clad Plate is required to undergo artificial aging. Since the material has been aged artificially, the 2024 T351 Plate gains the ability to resist stress corrosion.
